The lift in Ashgrove House had been broken since the spring, so Mrs Ida Kell carried her shopping up fourteen floors and talked to the stairwell as she went. She talked about the canal. Every evening she walked down to the water to watch the kingfishers, and every evening she came back up a little more like them, quick and bright and never still.

Her neighbours on the ninth floor loved her. They brought her soup when she had a cold and kept a spare key to her door for emergencies. Her son Terry rang every Sunday to say the same thing, that she should let them look after her. Ida thanked them all and went back down to the water.
One night in November she did not come back up. The caretaker, Oswin, found her wet footprints on the stairs and followed them down to the car park, where the towpath met the bins. Her cardigan hung on the railing. Beside it the water lay flat and grey, and a blue flash went over it low and fast, as if someone had thrown a jewel.
People said afterwards that she had simply become what she loved. Terry sold the flat in the new year. Oswin hung her spare key on a hook in the lobby, and when a kingfisher came down by the bins in February, he stood at the doors and watched it until it was gone.
