All you need is love script on a wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the inner wrist and hand of a person wearing two metal chain bracelets, with the words All you need is Love written across the wrist in a thin cursive script. The linework is fine and even, with light shading giving the lettering a soft grey tone against the skin. The image is black and white, with a dark, textured background and a vignetted border framing the wrist.

That somebody was me, because I sold the tickets and had the pencil behind my ear.

I copied it onto the back of a raffle card in the thin hand my mother taught me, the letters leaning forward as if they were in a hurry to get somewhere. All you need is love. Four words I had seen on sheet music and on the side of a bus, and never once thought about. The singer, a girl from Bristol with a laugh like a dropped tray, read them twice and then looked at me over the card as if I had handed her something heavy to carry.
Then the power cut came, as it always did at ten past nine, and the hall went dark except for the lamps over the exit. Somebody started singing without a band. The dancers kept moving, shuffling in the black, bumping into each other and laughing. I stood by the cash box with the card in my fist and understood that the words were the only part of the song nobody needed to see. I folded it into my coat pocket, where it still is, the pencil gone soft from years of my thumb.
