Allonsy lettering with swirls on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black ink script word, Allonsy, sitting on the inner upper arm. Thin decorative swirls and flourishes surround the lettering, with some smaller curled linework above and below the letters. The ink is solid black and grey against pale skin, set on a white background.

The 23.40 out of Bradford always pulled away late, and Mrs Okonedo always boarded at the stop outside the shut-down bakery with a carrier bag of eggs held against her coat like a baby. Then came the Tuesday the snow went sideways across Thornbury Road and the bus slid into the shadow of the shelter and stalled dead. Three of us were aboard: a lad with a cello case, a nurse still in her blues, and Mrs Okonedo, who had stopped counting her eggs and started counting seconds instead. I told them to hold the poles. I turned the key, the engine coughed like an old man, and this time I said it out loud, the way you'd speak to a horse you meant to win with.
It caught. Nobody cheered. The nurse laughed first, then the lad, and Mrs Okonedo peered at me over her glasses. "You've been practising that," she said. I admitted I had. She said it was a daft word for a bus, and I agreed it was, and we crawled the last miles at the pace of a funeral procession with the heater roaring and the windows fogging white.
At her stop she got up slowly, cradled the eggs, and asked me to say it once more. I did. She nodded as if I had finally given the right answer, then stepped down into the snow without slipping once, and not a single shell cracked.
