Heart above the word Always
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A single-line drawing of an outlined heart sits above the word Always written in loose, looping script. The linework is uniform black with slightly rough, brush-like edges and no shading. The design is centred on a plain white background with the heart's point touching the top of the letter A.

The snow had shut the pass for nine days when the carter's boy knocked at the Hollin Inn with his cap full of ice. Mistress Aud sat him by the hearth and gave him the heel of the loaf, because that was the custom of the house, and she had no notion of breaking custom for a stranger's cold.

Her husband had gone over the pass in the first week of autumn with three mules and a sack of wool. He promised to be back before the first hard frost. Every evening she set the lamp in the front window. Every morning she scraped the rime from the glass with the side of her hand and wrote one word in the cleared patch, a word she could spell but could not write much else in. Always. By noon the sun had drunk it, and she wrote it again the next day.
On the ninth night the boy said, with his mouth full, that a muleteer at the far inn had a man with him, lame in both feet, who had asked after a woman who kept a lamp lit. Aud asked him nothing more. She fetched her shawl and the lantern and took the boy by the sleeve to the door, and it was only when she had opened it that the cold came in and she saw how high the drifts had risen.
She could not cross the pass by night, so she went back to the window and wrote the word again with her finger, bigger than before, so the lamp shone through the letters. Beside it she drew a heart in one line, the way Tomas had once carved one into the lid of her flour bin with a burnt stick. In the morning a man came down the white slope on a crutch cut from a fence post, and he read the window before he read anything else.
