The image is a plain black line on a white background with no shading or colour.

I am writing it on the landing between the fourth and fifth floors, with the paper flat against the window ledge and Mrs Okafor's radio coming up through the concrete, playing the same football phone-in it always plays.

We spent eleven years being careful. Careful at the bus stop, careful at the Christmas do, careful with the flat key you kept on my hook and never once asked for back. I thought that was what loving someone quietly looked like. Then your nan's funeral, and you standing by the bins with a carrier bag of her cardigans, saying nothing at all, and I understood that careful is only another word for absent.

So I am doing it the way you taught me, on the back of a council letter, one line running into the next without lifting the pen. Look at it. The line runs off the edge of the page and does not stop, which is how I want this to go on past the point where either of us gets embarrassed. The heart sits in the middle where the word should be, because words always seemed too small for what I mean.

The lift will be fixed by Friday, they say. I will not wait for it. I am coming down these stairs tonight, and if you are at the bins again, I will be the one holding the other end of the bag.
