Small arrow tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black arrow with double chevron fletching sits on the side of a finger, pointing towards the knuckle. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The photograph is black and white, with a hand in the foreground and a person's hair and top visible behind it, and the face is not shown.

Dear Tomasz,

The ferry from Calais was late again, so I have had time to think about the little stone at the Ostrow crossing, the one you used to climb as a boy. Mum says they have finally repainted the boundary posts, and someone has put a fresh arrow on the wall of the old toll hut, two chevrons at the back and a shaft running straight to the gate. Nobody knows who did it. The guards pretend not to see it.
I stood under it on Tuesday with my papers in my hand, and the officer asked my business. I said I was visiting family on the far side. He looked at the arrow, then at me, and stamped the page without another word. I think he understood it better than I did. Those marks were always meant to say go on, not turn back.
Mum asked whether I was coming home for the harvest. I told her I had already crossed, and that the arrow was pointing somewhere I had not yet been. She laughed and said that sounded like something you would write.
I am sending this with the Thursday post, though I suspect it will arrive after I do. Keep the stamp. Write me on the back of it if you have nothing else.
Your brother, Pavel
