Fine line wrist tattoo of a small black ampersand between thin blue and red lines on the inner forearm, with a spoon ring on the hand below.

Ampersand between coloured lines on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a hand and wrist showing a thin band of tattoo lines: a solid blue line above, a dotted blue line, and a solid red line below. A small black ampersand sits in the centre of the band. The linework is fine and even, with the colour lines appearing crisp against the skin, and the background is a blurred grey gravel surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Hollis taught you to paint an ampersand before he let you touch a letter that mattered. 'Everything else is just holding a brush,' he said, flicking the loop of it onto a scrap board in one breath. 'The ampersand is the only letter that has to agree with itself.'

You practised on the back of the bakery door all that spring, while the lorries ground through the high street and the yard gravel turned white with dust. Every morning you ruled the two blue guidelines with a steel rule and a pencil sharpened with a penknife, then the red baseline underneath, because Hollis said a shopfront needed a floor and a shadow. The dotted blue between the lines was for chalk marks, the places where the gold leaf would sit.

Then came the order from Partridge and Sons, the ironmonger's, whose old fascia had split down the middle in a February gale. Mrs Partridge stood in the doorway with her arms folded and watched you measure the board twice. 'Make the ampersand bigger than the rest,' she said. 'My husband always did the sums in his head and never once got them right, but he liked the look of that little curl.'

You painted it in black on the last Saturday of June, the brush barely loaded, and when you stepped back into the road the curl sat exactly where the chalk had promised it would. Hollis lit his pipe and said nothing for a long time. Then he took the rule from your hand, rubbed the pencil marks away with his thumb, and told you the job was finished.
