Fine line wrist bracelet tattoo

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a wrist showing a delicate tattoo of two thin wavy lines, one solid and one dotted, that wrap around the wrist like a bracelet. A small hexagonal outline sits at the centre of the band, with fine stippled detail inside it. The soft, even lighting and plain grey background keep the focus on the linework.

Dear Tom,

The tide came up over the causeway again on Tuesday while Brother Anselm was still singing vespers, and he finished the psalm with his sandals full of water. I have decided that is the sort of thing you would have laughed at, so I am telling you about it. Nothing else happens here except the bells and the eel traps.

I have finished the thing you asked for, though it took longer than I said. Father Gilbert let me use the good silver wire from the reliquary cupboard once I promised to give it back polished. I drew the two lines out in ink first, one wave running clean, one broken into dots where the water goes under the reeds. The hexagon was the hard part. Brother Oswin says it is the shape the bees make because it wastes no room, and I wanted it small enough to sit at the bottom of the band without swallowing the waves.

Inside it I put a speck of black, a dozen little stipples, so that when you turn it to the lamp it looks like something caught and held rather than something empty. I have wrapped it in waxed linen with the instructions. Wear it under your cuff where the captain will not ask questions.

When the boat comes in at the spring tide, look for the grey sail with the patched mainsail. If you do not come home by Michaelmas I will walk the causeway at low water and count the posts myself.

Your brother, Edmund
