Ampersand tattoo behind the ear

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

A small ampersand symbol is tattooed behind the ear in a thin, light-coloured line. The white or pale ink stands out against the skin, which shows little shading or tone. The plain, pale background and soft lighting keep the focus on the tattoo and the ear, and a small metal stud is visible on the lobe.

The well at Corran Wells had run dry twice in one lifetime, and the two families who shared it had not spoken since the second time. Sefa Marr kept the water ledger because she could write and because nobody else would sit still long enough. Every dawn she walked the road out past the salt flats to read the gauge stone, and every dawn the sand had crept a little closer to the trough.

The trouble was the word. The Haddons signed their agreements with a small hooked sign for "and", a looped mark like a dropped rope, and the Varnys wrote the whole word out in full. Neither family would put their name under a line the other had written. So the pipe went unmended for three summers while the camels grew thin and the children stopped counting them. Sefa tried writing both forms on the same page, and the page was refused at the market and sent back to her with a stone on it.

In the autumn a surveyor came along the road with a drawing of new pipe and a bill for the cost. He wanted both families to agree the sum before he would lay a single length. Sefa took a pen from her sleeve and, without asking anyone, drew the looped sign in pale ink beside the Varny word, then set the Haddon name beside that, and pushed the paper across the table. "It means and," she said. "It has always meant and. You only ever wanted to be the other word."

They signed that afternoon. The pipe went in before the rains, and the water came up clear and cold into the trough, where the camels stood in a line, waiting for nobody to tell them whose turn it was.
