Small geometric flower tattoo inside the ear
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black mandala-style flower with eight or more radiating petals sits on the inner ear cartilage. The linework is fine and even, with a dotted or solid centre and no shading, and the design is shown in black ink only. The close-up composition is soft and natural, with the ear filling most of the frame against a pale background and dark hair at the edge.

The lift at Carrow House stopped between the eleventh and twelfth floors with a noise like a held breath, and Ruth Okonedo swore at it in the flat voice she kept for machines. She wedged the torch under her chin and eased the maintenance hatch open. Someone had been up here before her. On the inside of the steel panel, in faded biro, was a flower with eight petals, each one a loop inside a loop, and a dot in the centre where the pen had rested long enough to bleed.

She knew whose hand it was before she knew why. Mrs Abidemi on twelve had sent the children up with sweets when the power went off in the winter, and the youngest, a boy called Kofi, drew on anything he could reach. Ruth had scrubbed a hundred of his stars off the bin stores over the years. This one she left alone. She sat on the lift floor with her knees up and copied it into the back of her job sheet, petal by petal, counting them twice to be sure.
The cable took the car's weight with a jolt, and the doors opened onto the twelfth floor. Mrs Abidemi stood there in her dressing gown with her hair wrapped in a scarf, asking whether the engineer had come about the boiler. Ruth said no, it was only the lift, and it was fixed now. Then she showed her the sheet. Mrs Abidemi traced the dot in the centre with one finger and said Kofi had been very proud of that one, and had drawn it again on the lift wall the week before the family moved away, so that the next engineer would have something to look at.
