Red berry sprig inside the ear
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A close-up of an ear showing a small, delicate sprig tattoo. A thin dark stem curves down from the upper inner helix, with a few tiny leaf-like marks near its base and a cluster of red dots at the top. The linework is fine and the ink is crisp against the skin, with soft natural light and a plain background of hair at the edges.

The snow had sealed the pass for three days, and by the third evening the inn at Scarth Gate had run out of everything except potatoes and patience. You are sixteen, the only one the landlady trusts with the cellar key, and you are sent up the back stairs with a candle and orders to fetch the guest in room four before the broth goes cold.

The guest is a surveyor called Mrs Abernethy, who has been measuring drifts for the county and shows no interest in broth. She sits by the window with a sprig of rowan standing in a tin cup of water, its berries gone deep red in the warmth of the stove pipe. She says she cut it from the tree by the chapel wall the morning the road closed. Her mother always said a branch brought indoors in winter keeps a house from forgetting it has a door.
You laugh, then stop, because she is not joking. She asks you to carry the cup down to the kitchen. On the stairs the stem keeps catching on your cuff, and by the bottom step a single berry has burst in your palm, leaving a mark as red as a thumbprint on a letter.
In the morning the plough grinds up from the valley and the road opens like a seam. Mrs Abernethy leaves a shilling under the saucer and walks out into the glare without looking back. The cup stays on the kitchen sill, three berries fewer, and when the snow finally melts you find a new green leaf pushing out from the base of the stem, as if the branch had decided, after all, to stay.
