Two small soot sprite tattoos on the neck
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a woman's neck and ear, with a black and gold quatrefoil earring on the lobe. Two small tattoos of round, black soot-sprite-like creatures with white eyes sit on the neck below the ear. The solid black ink is simple and graphic, set against soft skin tones and a denim collar.

Dear Mo,

The rain has been coming sideways across Saltergate Market since Tuesday, and the soot gets into everything: the tea tins, the dried apricots, the seams of my awning. Old Bertha swears the little black things are why the drains keep blocking, but I think it's only dust that has learned to be curious. Three of them came up under my stall on Thursday, round as sloes, each with a pair of white eyes that looked at me as if I owed them money.
I put out a saucer of sugar lumps, which I know is daft. By Saturday there were eleven. They rolled behind the crates of mandarins and sat in the wet with their eyes wide open. When the first customer of the morning, a lad in a yellow cagoule, bent to pick up a dropped pound coin, one of them tipped it neatly into the gutter before he could reach it. He never noticed. I did.
So I've given them the corner by the fish van, where the gulls don't go. Keep the sugar coming and they keep the drains clear, or so the bargain goes. I've never trusted a bargain I couldn't read the small print of, but my mother didn't either, and she kept this pitch for forty years without a single flood.
Come down on Saturday if the rain lets up. Bring your good umbrella and don't mention the sprites to the council man. He's already eyeing the drains with that face.
Love, Pat
