Anatomical heart in an ornate oval frame
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a human heart with visible vessels and chambers sits within an oval inner border. An ornate outer frame of scrolling leaves and a small beaded cartouche at the top surrounds it. The linework is solid black on pale tracing paper, with no shading or colour, and the design is centred and symmetrical.

You have been holding the tracing paper up to the strip light for ten minutes, because the man in the grey anorak says it is a map of his mother's village and the customs form has no box for maps. Under the glare the lines go pale and then come back, black and certain: a heart drawn the way a doctor draws one, its great vessels coiled at the top like rope on a bollard, sitting inside an oval border that is held in a frame of scrolled leaves. A beaded cartouche crowns it all, empty.

"It is not a map," he says, when you ask what it shows. "It is the inventory." He will not say of what. His hands are steady; yours are not quite. You turn the sheet over and find nothing on the back but a pencilled date and a fold worn soft as cloth. Behind you the queue shuffles, and a child is singing the same two bars of something over and over.
You think of your father's bench at home, the clock he rebuilt, the way he would never say what a part was for until you had fitted it yourself. You ask the man for the name of the village. He gives it, and then, more quietly, the name of the street where the frame was made, a shop in a city that no longer has that shop. You stamp the form CLEARED, and the stamp is so loud the child stops singing.
He takes the paper back and folds it along the old crease, heart inside, frame outside, and tucks it under his arm the way you carry something that has to arrive whole. At the gate he turns once. You do not wave. You simply lift the next file to the light, and it is only a passport, and only a face, and the lines in your head stay exactly where he left them.
