BLT ingredients in a Venn diagram on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a green lettuce leaf, a red tomato slice and crispy bacon rashers arranged as overlapping circles, with black linework forming a Venn diagram over them. The food is shaded with soft gradients, and the lettuce and tomato are coloured in bright greens and reds against the pale skin. The design is centred on the forearm, with a red and white checked fabric and dark background at the edges of the frame.

Teodor Vale had kept the Skerrick light for nineteen years, and in all that time the supply boat had never once delivered what he had written on the list. Tuesday was no different. He stood on the gallery with the wind pulling at his jersey and unwrapped the paper parcel with the care of a man defusing something. Inside were three rashers of bacon, a lettuce leaf that had survived the crossing better than it had any right to, and one tomato, sliced by someone who clearly did not care about thickness.

He carried them down to the galley and laid them on the board in the order his mother had taught him, the only order he trusted. Then he did what he always did when the sea grew too loud to think over. He drew. On the back of a tide table he sketched three overlapping circles, the lettuce, the tomato and the bacon, and ruled a line through each one so that every ingredient had its own patch of paper. Where the circles met, he wrote nothing, because that was where the sandwich lived, and nobody on the mainland had ever understood that.
That night the lamp failed at two in the morning, and he climbed the iron stairs with a torch in his teeth, muttering about bulbs and the Admiralty and his own stubbornness. He was still polishing the lens when dawn came up grey and clean over the water.
The next Tuesday the boat brought bread. Tucked beneath the wrapping was a note in the skipper's careless capitals: YOUR DIAGRAM IS MISSING THE BREAD. Teodor read it twice, then took the tide table from his pocket, studied his three circles for a long while, and reached for his pencil to draw the fourth.
