Raised middle finger fist line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A small white line drawing of a clenched fist with the middle finger extended upwards, finished with a cuff or band at the wrist. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the design is centred on a plain black background with no other elements.

You had been promised the Bishop's psalter by Candlemas, and you had told Prior Edmund twice that vellum does not hurry for anyone, least of all a bishop. The cold came off the fen in the night and crept through the shutters of the scriptorium, and by Lauds the ink had thickened in its horn pot until it would barely run from the quill. Brother Anselm, who copied the calendar and reported everyone else, watched you scrape at a blot and sighed the sigh of a man keeping score.

The Prior's window looked down on the cloister garth, and at the hour of Terce he came to it, hands folded in his sleeves, to watch the lay brothers carry turf to the kitchen. You saw him see you. You had been taught that the Rule forbids idle hands, not idle thoughts, so you lifted your right hand from the page, set your fist against the grey light, and raised the one finger the Rule had never thought to mention. He did not move. Neither did you. The bell began, and the moment closed like a door.
At Compline he sent for you, and you went expecting penance: a week on bread and water, or a night in the apple cellar. Instead he set a fresh leaf of black-dyed vellum on the lectern and a pot of white lead beside it. "The margin beside the twelfth psalm is empty," he said. "Draw me what you were saying." You hesitated, then drew it, small and precise, the lines as thin as hair, a plain cuff at the wrist like the sleeve of any brother's habit.
When the Bishop's gift went out at Candlemas, the psalter had a pale fist in the margin of the twelfth psalm. His secretary turned the leaf twice, frowning, and asked what it signified. Prior Edmund folded his hands into his sleeves and answered without looking up. "A brother's prayer, my lord. He prays with some energy."
