Red heart and heartbeat line on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A red heart with a black outline sits at the left end of a thin black heartbeat line that runs across the inner wrist. The linework is fine and even, and the heart is filled with solid red ink. The image is framed closely on the wrist against a dark patterned fabric background.

Dear Mags,

The fryer packed in again somewhere off Holyhead, so I've been cooking the crew's eggs by hand and telling them it's a fashion. The sea's flat as a tray tonight. I keep the galley radio low and listen to the engine, which has a rhythm I've learned the way you learn a dog's breathing. Thump, thump, a little hitch, then thump. Young Dafydd says it's rubbish and the chief's fine, but he doesn't know what a hitch sounds like when it means something.
Yesterday the purser pinned an old pen trace from the engine room above the hatch, a wobbly black line jumping up and dropping back down across the paper. Somebody, years ago, had drawn a small red heart in biro at the very start of it, where the line is still calm and hasn't begun to climb. I asked the purser who did it. He shrugged and said the night watch, probably bored. I thought about that all through the lunch shift, scraping burnt onions off the hotplate.
Here's what I've decided. The spikes only mean something because of the quiet stretch before them, the bit that carries on regardless. Maybe that's what the heart was for. I'm going to stop blaming the fryer and get the new one fitted at Fishguard, and I'll send you a photograph of that chart if the purser lets me take it down.
Love, Ray
