Anchor and birds tattoos on ankles
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet rest on grass, one wearing a lace garment and the other a grey canvas shoe. A small solid black anchor sits on the first ankle, and three small black birds in flight sit on the top of the second foot. The tattoos are simple, bold silhouettes against pale skin, and the soft green grass and light fabrics fill the rest of the frame.

Before the gulls woke, Mother Hesketh lit the ovens in the bakehouse at Porthmellow and set the dough to rise under damp cloths. Her two girls, Idony and Wren, were already down the steps, barefoot on the cold flags, because whoever reached the sill first got the heel of the loaf.

The old bread-men said the sea took a piece of every harbour child. Idony, the elder, went to the anchor-smith in the lower town and asked for a small one, cast in black iron, so she would always have something that held. Wren wanted nothing of the sea. She watched the birds lift off the breakwater at first light and counted them as they went, three, then five, then none.
When the autumn boats came in short-handed, Idony took the bread cart over the hill to the markets at Lanreath and did not come back for a month. Wren kept the ovens going alone. Each dawn she dusted flour on the sill and found a single grey feather there, and once a scrap of tarred rope tied in a knot she knew from her sister's fingers.
In spring Idony walked back down the hill with flour still in her hair and three birds rising behind her, swallows or gulls, she could never agree which. Wren put the kettle on without a word. That morning the loaves came out of the oven with a crust so pale and even that the whole village said it was the best the Hesketh girls had ever made, and neither of them corrected it.
