Matching infinity symbols on two ankles
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two pairs of feet and ankles overlap on a textured carpet. Each visible ankle carries a small, single infinity symbol drawn in thin black linework. The tattoos are solid and even, with no shading, and the soft natural light keeps the composition simple and centred on the ink.

The ropewalk at Ostia smells of tar and wet hemp, and you are standing in it with a fistful of undyed flax that Anaxo has just tossed at you. He is laughing at your frown. 'It's the wrong colour for a sailor's bargain,' he says, 'but a loop laid right will outlast the men who tie it.' You have no idea yet what he means, only that your hands are shaking and the grain ship for Carthage is loading at the next quay.

Thalia is sailing on it at first light. She has her father's debts and a cousin who will take her in, and she has no patience for speeches. So you sit on an upturned barrel together and work the cord with your thumbs, making the figure Anaxo calls the eight lying down: a single line that crosses itself at the middle and never meets its own start. You pull the join tight with your teeth. 'That's not a knot,' she says. 'It doesn't end anywhere,' you tell her, 'so it can't come undone at either end.'
She laughs, pockets it, and goes down the gangway without looking back, because she is Thalia and looking back is for people who might change their minds. The sea takes three seasons to bring you news. When the letter arrives, sealed in wax with a Punic fish pressed into it, there is a cord folded inside, grey now and frayed at one edge.
The note is one line in a careful hand: It has not come undone. You turn the cord over under the lamp and follow the loop with your thumb, around and across and around again, looking for the place where you tied it off. You cannot find it. Somewhere on the far side of the sea, she is still holding the other end.
