Matching anchor tattoos on two feet

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest on an embossed dark leather surface, each with a small anchor tattoo. The anchors have simple, thin black outlines with little shading and sit on the outer side of the ankle area. The image is in black and white, so the composition focuses on the matching simple designs.

The girls of Sallow School told the story of the boat to each other on the wall by the harbour. Plainly, it went like this. The fishing boat Patience went down off Sallow Point in a March gale, and the two girls, whose fathers were aboard, walked to the harbour every evening after lessons to wait. They drew small anchors on their ankles in blue biro so the sea would know whose daughters they were. The ink washed out in a week. The girls did not forget. Their fathers never came back, but the girls stayed fast to one another, and the village said that was a rope nobody could cut.

Ruth crossed the hall with two cups of squash and set one down by Marjorie's elbow. "You still have the badge in your pocket," she said. "You always did hold on to things." Marjorie pinned it on crooked. Then, under the table, they slipped off their left shoes and set their feet side by side on the cold lino, the anchors facing the same way, and Ruth laughed, the first real laugh anyone had managed in that hall all evening.

They stayed beneath the trestles until the caretaker began switching off the lights, two pairs of feet on the floor and neither of them letting go.
