Cat and dog tattoos on two feet

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of two bare feet resting side by side. The left foot carries a small, solid black silhouette of a cat in a standing pose, and the right foot carries a thin outline of a dog's head. The ink is crisp against the skin, and the feet fill the frame against a softly blurred background.

Soot was asleep on the costume trunk, a black cat with the stillness of a furled umbrella. She had walked the high wire every night for eleven seasons without once looking down, and crowds in Swindon and Stoke still asked after her by name. Beside her, the old terrier Biscuit lay with his nose on his paws and one ear half up, as if he were always listening for a band that had stopped playing years ago.

We sold the horses in March. Then the poles, then the calliope with its missing keys. On the last night in Ludlow the rain held off long enough for us to open the flap and let in the eleven people who had come to watch. Halloran stood in the ring in his frayed coat and announced each act as if the seats were full. When Soot climbed the rope, the eleven people went quiet, and so did the wind.

Afterwards I found Biscuit by the ticket booth, sitting beside a patch of wet grass where the shape of his own body had been pressed flat. He looked up at me and waited, the way he always had, for someone to tell him where to go next.
