Anchor and infinity symbol on a wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black anchor is combined with a looping infinity symbol, which runs from the anchor's shank to form the loop. The lines are solid and even, with no shading, and the ink is dark black. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against a blurred pale blue background of water.

Dorrie Halloran brought the rope up from the harbour wall in March, coiled over one arm like a thing she had been asked to deliver and was not sure she should. It was Ned's warp, the grey hawser he kept on the back step of the boatshed, and one end still carried the iron anchor he had shackled to it the summer before he went out and did not come back. She set it on my potting bench among the cracked terracotta and said only, "He'd want it in a garden, not the bottom of a drawer."

I did not argue. I had spent the winter stepping around that boat-shaped hole in the shed and I was tired of pretending it was not there. So I took the knife to the twine and began to work.

Ned had taught me one splice before we married, sitting on the slipway with his hands busy and his voice steady. You made an eye, then ran the strands back through themselves, tuck over and under until the join disappeared and the line seemed to have no beginning. "Go on forever, that will," he had said, pleased with himself, the way men are about knots. I thought it was a sailor's brag, until I found a faint pencil mark on the underside of the anchor's shank, where he had drawn a loop lying on its side.

I did not plant the rope. I wrapped it round the old wooden trellis by the back gate, let the sweet peas climb it, and set the anchor in the bed below where the soil stays damp. By June the loops were green and tangled and running into each other, and I could no longer tell where the rope ended and the garden began.
