Fine line anchor with loops
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle style outline of an anchor with a looped, cross-like top and two curling arms that end in heart-shaped scrolls. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with no shading. The design sits centrally in the frame against warm, reddish skin, with a dark strap or fabric edge at the upper right.

You learned your knots from Mags on the waltzer, long before the fair ever found its way to the coast. She said a rope that won't hold is just a rumour with string on it, and she made you tie a bowline blindfold in a sodden field outside Ipswich while the generator coughed and the ghost train groaned behind the tent. By the third week you could do it with your eyes open and your mind on the takings.

The fair wintered in a boatyard at Wroxham, hulls propped on blocks like sleeping cows. Mags had a brother who sailed out of Lowestoft one March and never came home, and she kept his things in a biscuit tin under her bunk: a pipe, a tide table, a brass button stamped with a small anchor. One night she slid the tin across the table and said the Scrambler's hatch would need repainting before Easter. If you could draw the thing properly, with the arms curling like ribbon and the top looping back on itself like a question, she'd have the signwriter do it in gold.
You sketched it on the back of a ticket roll, one unbroken line that never lifted from the paper. She held it to the lamp and laughed until she had to sit down. "Hope's heavy," she said, tapping the scrolled ends. "That's what it looks like when you refuse to let go and still keep your hands open."
Easter came and the fair moved on to Norwich. The hatch shone gold above the queue, and every evening you walked past it on the way to the generator, your fingers brushing the brass button she'd pressed into your palm. Mags never said goodbye, and you never asked her to. You just tied the knots.
