Anchor and infinity symbol on hip

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo shows an anchor whose shank passes through an infinity symbol, with a dot at the upper join. The lines are bold and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on tanned skin. The tattoo sits in the centre of the frame, with pink fabric crossing the bottom right corner.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth had worked the ticket window at Carrick Road for thirty-one years, and in all that time the last train of the evening had never once been early. Tonight it was four minutes late, and the wind off the estuary had found every gap in the glass booth. She pulled her cardigan closer and watched the platform lamps stutter.

A young man came through the barrier with a canvas holdall and a sailor's roll to his walk, asking for a single to Penzance. He wanted the sea, he said, not the sea he had been living beside all his life. Ruth stamped the ticket and didn't ask. She kept a drawer of lost things under the counter: a glove, a christening bonnet, a brass compass with a cracked glass. Every object carried a paper tag with a date, as if the station could keep a promise to come back for them.

The signal clanged green. Through the window she saw the boy stop at the platform edge and turn back, not towards her, but towards the rails running out into the dark where they bent toward the coast road and then the horizon. He lifted his hand to the old iron bracket above the bench, where the company crest had been cast for a century: an anchor threaded through a looping figure eight. He pressed his thumb to the place where the two met, the way a sailor checks a mooring before he trusts it.

Ruth went back to her ledger. In the morning she would put the compass in the drawer with a new tag and write that it had been claimed, though she knew it had only been carried on.
