Infinity symbol with lightning bolt on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline of an infinity symbol sits on pale skin, with a small lightning bolt inside the right loop and two small open circles at the lower right end of the line. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a soft, blurred background.

Where the Ashby line crossed itself at Long Wend, the rails made a figure of eight, and the signalman's job was to stop two trains meeting in the middle of it. Tobias Grieve kept the box there for forty years and never once let a train take the wrong loop. People said he could hear a wheel running out of true from the far end of the platform.

His daughter Nell carried his tea down the cinder path each morning in a tin with a dented lid. One winter the telegraph wire above the crossing began to spit blue sparks. The stationmaster said it was the cold, but Tobias said the wire was counting something. He taught Nell to read them. One spark meant an eastbound train, two meant westbound, and a long fizzing string meant a stranger was coming who would have to be let through slowly.
The night the sparks ran in a long string, Nell was alone in the box with the lamp guttering. A man in a wet coat stepped off the last carriage carrying two brass lamps, and he asked her for the loop that goes round forever. She told him the line only goes round because someone keeps throwing the points. He set the lamps on the sill. They burned without oil, and the sparks stopped.
Nell worked the levers by hand until dawn. When her father came down the path with the tin, the lamps were gone and the wire hummed quietly. He poured her tea and said nothing about the stranger. After that, whenever the wire fizzed, she sent the night mail round the loop one more time before she let the visitor pass.
