Black script tattoo reading Love on the inner wrist, where the letter V is formed by a pair of crossed scissors.

Love script with scissors on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the inside of a wrist. The word Love is written in flowing script, and the letter V is replaced by a pair of open scissors whose blades cross beneath the letters. The lines are solid and even, with no shading, and the plain pale background keeps the focus on the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pask cut hair in the back kitchen of Seaview House on Saturdays, with a towel over the bread bin and the wireless tuned low to the shipping forecast. The scissors were her late husband's, long-bladed and sharp, and she had never let a lodger touch them.

On the first Saturday of April a new lodger, a quiet man who worked in the harbour office, asked her to take off the grey above his ears and nothing else. He did not explain and she did not ask. Instead she talked about the spring tides, the price of coal, and the Whitfield girl who had married a ferryman and then, to everyone's surprise, a dentist. Every so often the blades caught the window light and threw a bright flicker across the lino.

When she was done she held up the hand mirror and he studied himself for a long moment. "You've a steady hand," he said. "Dennis had a steady hand," she said. "He always said the trick was to keep the scissors open and the heart shut, so you never cut more than you meant to." He laughed, then stopped laughing, and reached into his jacket for a folded envelope with her name on it in careful capitals.

Inside was a single word in the same looping hand Dennis had used on the shop sign forty years before: LOVE. Where the V should have been he had drawn a pair of open scissors, their blades crossed beneath the letters as if waiting to be used. Mrs Pask folded the paper along its creases, slid it into her apron pocket beside the handles, and left the back kitchen door unlocked that Saturday.
