She worked it free with the point of her seam ripper and swore at the radio, which was playing the same Shirelles record it had played since opening time on Clarendon Street.

The coat belonged to Dolores Vane, who sang at the Majestic Lounge on Friday nights and had a habit of ringing the shop from a phone box when she needed something finished by the weekend. The leopard lining came off a market stall on Hessle Road, spotted black on tan, and Dolores wanted roses over it as if someone had thrown them there in a hurry. Maureen painted the big bloom in red first, then built the shadows in black so it lifted off the fur, and she mixed the leaves so dark they looked wet.

Dolores came in on Thursday with rain on her shoulders and tried the coat on in the back room, turning to see herself in the spotted mirror. The roses sat over the spots as if they had grown up through them. 'You've made me look like I've got a garden on my back,' she said, pleased, and asked whether the buds could be a touch more open.

After she left, Maureen stitched a single rose the size of a fingernail inside the collar, where nobody would look unless they were lifting it to fold. Beneath it she sewed her own initials, small and black, the way her mother had marked her school gym shoes, so the coat would always know whose hands had been in it.
