The shackle had seized over the winter, and Ruth had been at it since first light with a length of scrap pipe and a tin of penetrating oil that smelled of wet pennies. Behind her the *Marigold Ann* rocked against the fenders, her grey hull streaked with rust where the paint had given up. Her father had always said the anchor was the only honest part of a boat, because it told you exactly how deep the trouble was before you got there.

Nan had come down to the quay with a flask and a cardigan buttoned wrong. She stood with her hand flat on the bollard and watched the chain run through the hawse pipe, link by link, and didn't say anything about the cross her husband had painted on the wheelhouse door forty years ago. She didn't need to. Everyone in Brackenby knew which of them had made it, and which of them had been waiting for it to come home.

The shackle gave at last with a crack like a dropped spanner. Ruth wiped her hands on her jeans and found, tangled in the links where the chain met the anchor's shank, a strip of red wool from the old fishing gloves. Her father must have knotted it there the night before he sailed, the way he did before every trip, and then forgotten it, or chosen not to remember. She held it up to the pale morning light. Nan took the flask from her and poured two cups, one for each of them, and they stood together on the quay waiting for the tide to turn.
