Two side-by-side photos of a thin black script tattoo reading "and ever" on skin near the shoulder, above a black top.

"and ever" script tattoo near the shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

Two close-up photographs show the same black script wording, "and ever", written in a thin, flowing hand on the skin near the shoulder. The linework is fine and even, filled in solid black with no shading or colour. The wearer's black top sits below the tattoo, and the warm lighting keeps the ink clearly visible against the skin.

Mae, the bus shelter on Cathedral Road still has the glass cracked in the corner, so I sat there last night with the rain coming sideways and thought about your handwriting on the back of the takeaway menu. You always did loop your y's like they were trying to escape the line. I have your old scarf wrapped round my wrist because the buses are rubbish after eleven and I haven't got the nerve to ask Dev for a lift again.

The man in the chippy asked if I was waiting for someone. I said I was waiting for the 44, which is the truth, though not the whole of it. Mum rang at ten to say the house on Wellington Street is sold, and the removal men took the wardrobe with the sticking door. I told her I didn't mind. I do mind. I minded the whole way down the hill, past the bakery with the blue shutters and the launderette where we used to pretend the dryers were a fairground ride.

Here is what I actually wanted to write. The bus came at twelve past, empty except for a lad asleep against the window with his hood up. I got on, sat near the front, and watched the lights of the ring road slide over the glass, and I found myself saying your two words under my breath, the way you used to finish your sentences when you'd made a promise you couldn't quite keep. And ever. I'm posting this from the depot on Monday. Keep the scarf if you want it back. I'll keep the words.
