Angel wings across the upper back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A bare upper back shows a large pair of angel wings in black and grey shading, with individual feathers rendered in soft gradients and long, tapering primaries running down towards the lower back. On the upper right of the frame, on the shoulder, a smaller colour piece features pink and red roses, green leaves and a dark character or script element. The photograph is taken outdoors against a pale background, with the subject's head and face out of frame.

Sol had been unpicking the tail of the kite for an hour before the wind came round the corner of Ashdown House and found the balcony door. The frame was two bamboo spars lashed in a cross, and across it she had stretched the bin-bag plastic she'd saved all winter, cut into feathers, each one overlapping the last so the whole thing looked like it might lift off on its own.

Her brother Dev came up the stairwell two at a time, saying the lift was out again, saying the council would have their hides. He stopped at the roof hatch and looked at the wings laid flat on the tar. "You're not really flying that off the nineteenth floor."
"Watch me." She tied the last knot of the string to the cross and let it run through her fingers toward the edge, where the parapet ended and the whole grey estate fell away to the bus station. Along the top spar she had painted two roses in red and pink, and under them, in the careful capitals Nan had taught them both on the back of birthday cards, the word HOME.
The gust took the kite before Dev could argue. It rose, tilted, and for one long moment the long tail feathers streamed out over the drop like the primaries of something that had decided to leave. Then the string burned through her palm and it was gone over the rooftops, bright against the sky.
Dev let out a breath. "Well," he said. "That's you sorted, then."
