Angel wings with halo tattoo

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline tattoo of stylised angel wings with a simple halo floating above them. The wings have scalloped feather edges and end in spiral curls at the base. The linework is solid and even, with no shading, and the design fills most of the frame against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry was late again, so Ailsa sat on the harbour wall with a crate of gulls' eggs between her boots and watched the mainland fog swallow the lighthouse one storey at a time. Her uncle had carved the figurehead for the Morag Jean forty winters back, a woman with her arms held out to the weather, but the sea took her in the big gale and nobody on Eilean Mor had the heart to carve another. What they had instead was a pair of painted wings Ruari nailed above the wheelhouse door, scalloped along the feathers like bracken and rolled at the base into spirals, tight as the coils of rope on the bollards.

He came down the slipway at half eight with a tin of black enamel and a brush gone stiff at the tip. The halo was wrong, he said, too heavy, sitting on the wings like a dropped hoop. Ailsa told him halos were meant to hover, that was the whole point of them, and he said a thing that hovers over a boat in fog is only a lamp ring with ideas. She took the brush off him, thinned the paint with a drop of turps from her coat pocket, and drew the ring again on the grey board, lighter, a finger's width above the wings where the wheelhouse light would catch it at night.

The Morag Jean's horn sounded out past the Skerry, two long notes, and Calum brought her round the point with the wings just visible above the cabin roof. Ruari said nothing, but he watched the boat the whole way in, the way he had watched the old one in February when the compass spun and Calum steered by the painted curls alone, the rolling marks of the turn carrying them clear of the reef. Ailsa didn't ask him to say it. She set the crate down, pressed her palm flat to the wet enamel on the outermost spiral, and felt it give under her hand, still soft, still holding.
