Angel wings with script across upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bare upper back shows a pair of angel wings tattooed symmetrically across the shoulder blades, with feathers drawn in fine black linework and grey shading. The words embrace your dreams sit in cursive script between the two wings. The image is in warm, natural tones with soft focus, and the subject's head is cropped out of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down before the wind takes your hat, and I'll tell you about the sign at the crossroads past Sallow Wells. Some say a cook painted the words on it, some say a priest who'd lost his temper. Me, I say a woman named Marisol Quaye painted it, the summer the rain didn't come for three years and the wells went to dust.

She had a pair of wings made from iron wire and old tin, bolted to the back of her cart. Every morning she lifted them to the sun, then drove them slowly down the road toward the salt flats where the lorries stopped. The drivers laughed at her. She didn't mind. She said a wing needs somewhere to go before it can fly, and a sign is only a promise that somebody thought about the going.

One evening a boy came walking out of the heat with a sack of wrong answers and no water left. He asked her what the words meant, the ones she'd painted in curling black across the boards between the wings. She told him to read them slowly, out loud, the way you'd sing to a horse frightened of the dark. Embrace your dreams, he read, and laughed, and then he stopped laughing and sat down in the dust for a long while.

He stayed a year. He mended the wings and learned the cart. When the rain finally came back, it was the boy who drove it out to the crossroads with the feathers rattling behind him, and the sign still says what it says. You can read it from the road if the light's low. Go on now, it's late, and the wind isn't finished with us yet.
