Angel wings across the upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bare upper back shows a large pair of angel wings tattooed symmetrically from the shoulder blades outwards. The feathers are rendered with detailed black and grey shading, with soft highlights giving depth to the layered plumage. The plain background of a bright interior with short blonde hair at the top of the frame keeps the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink master of Orrin Vale told you the wings had to be drawn before they were ever cut, and you believed him until the morning the crown's sentinels carried in a pair of pinions burnt black at the tips. Your task was to match them, layer by layer, from the long flight feathers at the wrist down to the small covert feathers that cushion the shoulder. Grey first, the way the old masters taught, so the light would have somewhere to sit.

Each feather took the better part of a day. You learned to leave the paper bare along the quill's spine so the feather seemed to lift off the page. Your hands grew steady. The sentinels stopped asking how long the work would take and began asking whether the wings would hold in a gale.

On the last evening, the watch-captain, a woman named Hesper Dunmore with ink stains to the elbow, laid the finished pair across the long table and turned the lamp low. The shadows deepened along the feather edges until the wings seemed to breathe. She said nothing for a long while. Then she asked which one you had drawn first, and when you admitted it was the left, she nodded and touched the right, the one with the fainter highlights.

That one, she said, is the one they will ask to fly. You drew it with the most care, because you were afraid of it, and that is why it will carry them.
