She wore a pink bow tied just behind one ear, and she regarded the clerk the way she regarded everything, as if the price had already been agreed and he was merely slow to say it.

The item on the counter was a looking glass in a gilt frame, scrolled and chipped, with a teal enamel panel behind the glass and little black beads hanging from every corner. Mr Okafor had taken it in from a widow in Clifton who swore her husband had bought it for a shilling at a house sale. Clementine walked round it three times, then stopped in front of the glass and did not move on for a quarter of an hour.

On the Friday, the widow came back to collect it. The shop was empty except for the cat, who was sitting in the frame where the reflection ought to have been, her blue eyes half closed, a pink jewel pinned at her chest like a medal. Mr Okafor said he had turned his back for one minute. The widow said she had been married forty years and had never once seen a mirror look so pleased with itself.

She paid the shilling, tucked the frame under one arm, and walked home. Clementine stayed where she was, and the glass, for the first time since the house sale, showed a room full of people looking back at her.
