Anime girl and spirits on a thigh

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large tattoo on the outer thigh shows an anime-style girl with a reddish-brown bob and a red top, shaded in soft reds and pinks with a grey background. Around her, black linework illustrates a white masked spirit, a long white dragon, a small creature with a red headband and several tiny black soot sprites. The composition fills the thigh with the girl as the focal point and the black outlines framing the scene.

The soot sprites had been counting the coal again, which meant the night shift would run late. Nell Ambler sat on the lamp-room step with her knees drawn up and watched them climb out of the tipping heap, each one no bigger than a thimble and black as the inside of a kettle, each carrying a single lump in both arms like a baby they did not trust.

Her father had not come up at the buzzer. The overman said the roof had settled at the third level, and the rescue men had gone down with their picks and their silence. Nell did not believe in much, but she believed in the river that ran under the colliery road through a stone culvert, because she had seen its pale back moving under the water like a sheet on a line. When she asked the river for help, the dragon lifted its long head out of the spray and blinked at her with eyes the colour of wet slate.

It wanted her father's lamp, the brass one with the cracked glass that had burned in the deep since before she was born. Nell did not know why it wanted it, only that the sprites had already begun piling coal at the culvert mouth to make a road. She climbed down into the cold with the lamp held against her chest, and the dragon coiled once around her ankles and said nothing at all.

At the top of the shaft, a masked figure waited beside the winding wheel, still as a coat on a hook. It held out a brass check stamped with her father's number. When the cage rose, her father stepped out blinking, his face clean of soot for the first time in years, and behind them the river gave back the lamp, burning steady in the dark with a flame that needed no coal at all.
