Anime character with a large key on thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A full-colour tattoo of an anime-style young man in a blue and red outfit with spiky hair, holding a large ornate key at his side. The linework is soft and the shading is washed out, with loose splashes of yellow, blue and pink around the figure and key. The figure sits centrally on the outer upper thigh, with denim shorts visible at the top edge of the frame.

Nobody at the Ardent Ballroom in Hull could say where the boy came from, only that he arrived the week the house band stopped playing "Stardust" and started taking requests from lads with cigarettes behind their ears. He wore a blue jacket buckled at the cuffs and a red sash knotted at his hip, and he leaned an ornate key taller than his arm against the bandstand like a walking stick.

I was sweeping up lemonade and confetti on the Tuesday he asked me what it opened. I told him the back stairs, which went up to the roof, and that the roof had been locked since the war. He grinned as if I'd passed a test. "Stairs don't lock," he said. "Stairs just wait for you to be ready."
He asked me to dance. I said I was holding a broom. He took the broom, leaned it against the key, and steered me across the boards with a stiff little waltz that had no business coming from someone so skinny. The key tapped the floor in time, and where its point touched, the varnish seemed to bleed, a smear of yellow and then blue, as if the paint had remembered it was wet.
We went round until the leftover records ran out and the room was only the hum of the kitchen fridges. Then he stopped, bowed, and walked to the stairwell door. He tapped the lock with the key's bow and it clicked open. Above us there was a grey wedge of sky and the first gulls.
When I turned round for the broom, he was gone, and so was the key. But between the bandstand and the stairs ran a thin wet line of pink and blue, leading all the way to the open door, and I followed it up.
