Chibi Zelda and Link on two forearms
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two forearms show paired tattoos of chibi-style video game characters, one with a princess-like figure in a pink and blue outfit and one with a young hero in green tunic and sword. The linework is bold and clean, with the figures filled in softly and surrounded by loose watercolour splashes in pink, yellow, green and blue. The composition places the figures on the inner forearm of each arm, with a small blue orb with wings between them.

The frost had sealed the well again, so Tam broke the skin of ice with the heel of the spade while his sister Orla held the lantern at the gate. Snow hissed on the lamp glass. Below them the water had gone black, and in the black a light no bigger than a plum stone turned slowly, the way it had turned every January since their grandmother was a girl.

The fairy in the well had lent its light to the farm for as long as anyone remembered. It asked only one thing in return each winter: a tune played on the kitchen fiddle, so that it would not forget the sound of people. Their father had always played it, slow and sweet, but he was in hospital in town with a bad hip, and the fiddle hung on its nail above the range, gathering dust.
Orla took the fiddle down and tucked it under her chin. She played badly, squeaking, dragging the bow across the strings like a gate on a rusted hinge. The light rose out of the well, circled her head, and then it began to laugh, a sound like bells under water. Tam felt his cheeks go hot. In the barn the lambs stopped crying all at once. In the morning, when the snow lay blue across the yard, the spade was leaning straight against the wall with its blade polished bright, and a new glow sat in the lantern as though it had always lived there.
