Anime sailor character on a lower leg

Calf · Colour · Photo

A winking anime girl with long black hair, a purple hair band and a sailor-style uniform with a red heart brooch is shown in a bold, outlined cartoon style. The linework is dark and even, with flat colour fills in black, purple, red, peach and white, and soft shading on the face and collar. The figure sits centrally against plain skin, with the hair flowing down and curling off the bottom edge of the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wedding at Coldharbour was meant to start at noon, but by half past eleven the harbour wall was crowded with aunts and fishermen holding paper cups of cider. Nell Ashby had been given the job of keeping the flower girls out of the mud, and she had failed at that before the vicar arrived. Her hair was down, as it always was, black and heavy to the small of her back. Her grandmother had tied it with a purple band cut from an old sail, and it was the only thing anyone agreed on all morning.

The fog came in during the speeches, quick and white, the way it did in March. Tomas Vell, the bride's father, had taken his boat out before dawn to fetch the wedding fish and had not come back. The bride, Ruth, stood at the top of the slip with her veil lifting and said nothing. Nell had a red heart brooch pinned at her collar, the one her grandmother swore would hold a promise true for a year if it was worn on the day the promise was made.

She did not ask anyone. She unclipped the band, knotted the end of her hair twice round the iron bollard, and threw the rest of it out over the water like a line. It was heavier than rope and it did not tangle. Somewhere in the white a man swore in a voice she knew. She felt the weight at the far end go tight, then slack, then tight again, and she hauled hand over hand until the bow knocked against the stones and Tomas climbed out with a crate of silver fish and a face like wet paper.

Nobody made a fuss. Ruth came down the slip with her skirts bunched in one fist and took her father's arm. Nell wound her hair back up, salt running from it onto the purple band, and when the bride looked over, Nell winked. Ruth laughed for the first time that day, and the vicar, who had been waiting patiently, finally began.
