Ankh tattoo on the chest
Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the upper body of a person, cropped at the neck, wearing a light sleeveless top with a deep V neckline. A small, bold black ankh sits at the centre of the chest, with clean, solid linework and no visible shading. The image is monochrome with a soft blue tint and a heavily blurred background, and a thin necklace with a small pendant rests on the skin above the tattoo.

Dear Nell,

The cook on the Corvus Star has a habit of drawing in the spilt flour on the galley table when the swell is bad. Yesterday, with the pots skating across the stove and the bread refusing to prove, he traced a small tear-shaped loop sitting on top of a T. Ankh, he said, is what the old Egyptians wrote for life. He said it the way you'd mention the price of tea, then went back to kneading.
I asked him where a Liverpool cook learns hieroglyphs. He said a Maltese fireman taught him at Port Said, in exchange for a tin of peaches and a lie about his mother. Then he told me the loop was a key, and that the dead carried them so the door would open on the far side. I said that seemed a lot of trouble for a bit of gold. He laughed so hard he dropped a loaf on the deck.
Last night, in the quiet after the storm, he showed me his forearm. It wasn't ink, he said, he had enough of that already, but a scar from a boiler door that had healed in exactly that shape. He had been meaning to tell someone for thirty years. The stern light swung across the table and made the mark look like a second shadow lying on the flour.
I don't think he is sentimental. I think he has simply been at sea long enough to know which marks the water leaves and which it keeps. Tell Mam the bread is proving now.
Love, Dot
