Antelope skull on a finger with a red heart
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand is shown from the back with a shaded black and grey tattoo of an antelope or goat skull with long curved horns, placed across the middle finger. The skull has fine linework and soft grey shading that gives it a three-dimensional look. A small solid red heart outlined in black sits on the adjacent finger, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the ink.

Don't touch the skull yet, Tomas. Let the sand finish its argument with it first. My uncle found that one in the dry wash below Hollin Pan the summer the river forgot the way to the sea, and he carried it home across four days on a mule that complained the whole way.

He scrubbed it with vinegar and a boot brush until the horns came up dark and clean, and he could not stop turning it in the lamplight. The well-keepers said an antelope that old had walked the long way round to die, so that the wind would have something to sing to. My uncle said that was nonsense, that it had only been thirsty and stubborn, like every creature worth knowing. He traded it to a bone-seller in Corran for a tin of lamp oil and a bag of salt, and he came home lighter than he left.
The bone-seller's daughter, Ines, had asked for the skull before he sold it, and she wound red thread around the base of one horn so it would not slip from her hand. She wore it on her middle finger for a whole winter, and when the thread frayed she replaced it with a sliver of copper wire, then with nothing at all, because by then the bone had worn a groove into her skin that she said she could feel in the rain.
I asked her once why she never sold it, and she showed me the scratch of a heart she had drawn on the palm of her other hand with a burnt matchstick. Keep what you can hold, she said, and let the rest go to the dunes. Now sit down, the oil lamp is almost empty and I am only halfway to the well.
