A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorothy had the rifle oiled and laid across the kitchen table before the kettle had finished, because her son had rung from the Cairngorm road to say the stag was back on the high ground above Glen Tarff, and he wanted his father's gun to go up with him. Gerald had carried that Mauser for thirty-one years. It still smelt of gun oil and the cupboard under the stairs.

The antlers were the problem. They hung over the mantel in the front room, twelve points, pale at the tips where the varnish had worn, and every time Dorothy dusted them she thought about the morning Gerald had found the animal dead in the bracken and had sat on a stone beside it for an hour without lifting his rifle. He never told anyone why. He only said that some things were better counted than shot.

On the fourth day Callum came down the glen with nothing in his pack but a paper bag of oatcakes and a story about a hind that had walked straight past him at twenty yards. He set the rifle on the table, unloaded, and said he had not fired it. Dorothy asked him whether he had wanted to. He thought about it for a long time, the way his father used to, and then he said he had wanted to see whether he could stop.

She put the kettle on again. Outside the light was going over the hill, and on the mantel the old antlers caught it and held it a moment longer than they should have.
