A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My grandmother never trusted a man who called the sea gentle. She said the sea was patient, which is worse. On the slip at Porthgwidden there was a boat called the Hollow Wren, and every spring her skipper, Tobias Cardew, painted two wavy lines on her bow and a looped tail beside them, the mark for the water-carrier. Nobody on the quay could say why he bothered, since the Wren had never once come home with a full hold of anything but weed.

The year the nets came up empty for six weeks, Tobias sat on an upturned crate and talked to the gulls. He said the water was owed back to the shore, that a sign drawn true on the wood would keep the boat from drowning, and that the looped stroke was the bit that kept the rope from fraying. Half the men laughed. The other half went to the church hall to pray, and the girl who swept the fish market, who was called Mirren and had a cough that wouldn't quit, sat on the harbour wall with her feet over the drop and counted the waves.

On the seventh week the Wren went out in a grey swell with a borrowed engine and came back riding low, the hold heavy with mackerel that nobody could explain. Tobias never claimed it was the paint. He just went back to the slip with a tin of black and a steady hand and redid the lines on the bow, straight and thin, as if the sea had told him exactly where to put them.
