Stylised clef and dots on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black tattoo of a stylised musical clef, drawn as a curling top stroke, a long vertical line and three small dots to the right. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The design sits centred on pale skin against a dark background, with the photo taken straight on.

The fog had sat on the Dogger Bank for three days, thick enough that the mate stopped asking the lookout what he could see. Below decks, in the crew mess, Ada Lusk was teaching the cook's boy to read music from a sheet she had pinned beside the kettle. She had played the squeezebox in Grimsby pubs for forty years and had no patience left for his complaints.

"It's a bass clef," she said, tapping the curl at the top of the stave. "Hold it like a hook and it pulls the low notes up out of the floor. The dots are rests. You count them with your breath, not your fingers." Danny tried, but the ship groaned as it rolled, and the three dots he had inked on his palm with a biro smeared into one grey smudge.
When the fog finally lifted on the third morning, the Dutch coast was a pencil line on the horizon. Ada had gone up to the wheelhouse with her squeezebox, and Danny heard her playing a slow tune through the open hatch, each phrase stopping short where the marks told her to breathe. He copied the symbol into the back of his logbook without thinking: the curl, the long stroke, and the three small marks running down beside it.
Forty years later he still could not play a note. But when the ship's bell rang in threes, he always waited a beat before the next, the way she had taught him, and the gulls lifted off the rail as if they had heard the rest.
