Small black curved symbol on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of two tapered black strokes curves together to form an abstract flame or swirl shape on the inner wrist. The lines are bold and smoothly tapered, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The photograph is taken close up at an angle, with another hand and a pink covering in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Every reunion in Ashby Fold ends with the same argument about the lamp. Nobody remembers who first lit the thing in the schoolroom window, only that it was Nell Harker and Marion Pyke, who shared a desk for six winters and were not on speaking terms by the seventh. The story goes that the school had one candle left after the frost, and the two girls were told to share it for the Christmas concert.

They did not share it well. Nell cupped her hand on the left, Marion on the right, and the flame bent between them like a ewe leaning toward a gate. Mr Oddie the headmaster said a flame that leans is a flame that wants to go out, and he was right, though he meant it as a warning and the girls took it as a dare.
Forty years on, the hall smells of urn tea and damp coats. Nell arrives first and finds Marion already at the window, holding the same stub of candle in her palm. Neither says the name of the thing that happened. They light it together, one hand each side, and the flame stands up straight for the first time in living memory.
Folk in Ashby say a flame made by two hands stays lit until somebody lets go. Nobody has ever been brave enough to test it, so the candle is still in the window of the old schoolroom, and the caretaker, who has never once been asked to move it, says it is the only thing in Ashby that has never needed a reason to stay.
