The bowmaker's daughter was sent up the mountain before the first snow, with a yew bow, three arrows and a village's worth of grievance. The lion had taken four goats from the Kessan pens that autumn, and a boy's hand besides, and the elders said it would not stop until somebody stopped it.

She found it at the spring where the cedars thinned out, lying in the wet grass with its mane spread round its head like spilt ink. It did not get up. It turned its great head and looked at her the way the old men looked at a bad bargain, patient and unsurprised. She drew the bow. Her arms shook, which annoyed her more than the lion did.

Then she saw the thing lying against its flank, a kid goat no bigger than a loaf, still breathing, its legs folded under it. The lion had been carrying it down from the high pens, the ones it had never raided. Perhaps it had taken the kid from a wolf, perhaps from the same village that wanted it dead. She could not tell, and the lion did not explain.

She lowered the bow. The lion rose slowly and stepped aside so she could take the kid. When she had wrapped it in her cloak and turned for home, she heard heavy paws behind her all the way down to the tree line, and no further. In the village they asked for the skin. She told them the lion was dead, which was true enough. The bow still hangs in the cedar where she left it, and in the mornings the snow up there holds only one set of tracks, going up.
