Fine line geometric mark on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a small abstract mark tattooed on the outer upper arm. The mark is built from thin single-needle lines: a vertical stroke with a horizontal bar near the top, a short angled line and a zigzag-like crossing, with a slight tail at the base. A hand wearing a ring holds up a dark sleeve at the top left, and the background is soft and out of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Harold Pim had been levelling the coast road for eleven days, and the boarding house at Porthkerris was the only building in the parish with a wall solid enough to hold a bench mark. Mrs Trenear wanted to know what it would cost her. He told her nothing, which was true, and she gave him the back bedroom for the price of the breakfast he ate standing up.

Every morning he cut the same mark into the granite lintel of the yard gate with a cold chisel borrowed from the harbour master: a plumb stroke, a bar across its head like a flag that had lost its wind, a short slant, and the zigzag that meant the level had been carried true from the last point. Below it he scratched the height in feet and inches. The mark was only a sign to other surveyors that someone had been here and got it right. Nobody would read it for a hundred years, if ever.

On the twelfth morning the landlady's girl, Ada, followed him out with a tin mug of tea and asked whether the marks would still be there when the sea took the cliff. He said the sea took everything in the end, but granite was slow about it. She studied the lintel for a long time, then the thin tail hanging off the last stroke, and asked why it had one. He had never thought to explain it. The tail, he said, was where you could start again.
