A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last tent of Mabel Quill's Travelling Marvel stood on the shingle at Scarrow Bay with its canvas patched like a sail, and nobody paid to see the mermaid any more. She was painted on a board above the tank: red hair fanned out in the lamplight, a shell over her chest, a yellow fish at her elbow with a face like a kind uncle, a crab in a lurid waistcoat of claws, and a trident leaning against the frame for luck.

Mabel's son Tobias kept the books, which meant he sat on an upturned crate doing sums that never came out. One wet evening he found a girl asleep in the tank room, wrapped in a tarpaulin with weed tangled in her hair and her bare feet in the water. She said her name was Rosh, that she had walked up from the sea, and that the sea had stopped answering her. She looked at the board for a long time before she spoke again.

'That's Dorrit,' she said, touching the painted fish. 'He always fretted. And that's Prawl, who never once left a bargain without a fight.' Tobias asked her what the trident was for. 'Nothing now,' she said. 'Your lot stuck it there and forgot it, same as everything else you've put in a box.' He didn't argue. By morning he had taken the banner down, turned the tank into a plain pond with a sign that read Free Entry, and by the weekend the shingle was full of children with buckets.

On the last night Rosh waded out past the breakwater as the tide came in, and the painted bubbles on the board seemed to rise a little higher than before. Mabel swore the trident had gone from the frame. Tobias never found it, though he kept the board, and each morning the paint looked fresher, as if someone had been touching it up with a very fine brush.
