Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Ariel from The Little Mermaid with red hair and a purple shell top, Flounder the yellow and blue fish, and Marie the white cat, set among green seaweed and pink bubbles. The outlines are bold and the shading is smooth and cartoonish, with saturated colour throughout. The collage shows three angled views of the same forearm, with the design filling most of the frame.

The crack in the tank at the back of Calloway's bait shop had been weeping since March, and by the first week of October the floorboards behind the counter smelled of brine and damp newspaper. Ruth had bailed it twice with a saucepan. The flounder living in it, a nervous yellow thing the lads on the harbour wall called Dougie, had taken to hiding under the gravel every time the bell over the door rang.

Marie, the white cat who slept on the scales, was the only creature in the shop who wasn't bothered. She sat on the lid with her paws folded and watched the bubbles rising from the crack as if she were counting them. "Leave it, Marie," Ruth said, though the cat never did. Then on a Thursday a girl with a rope of red hair came in asking for lugworm and stayed an hour. Her name was Shona Pell. She had grown up three streets away and remembered the tank from when she was small, and she kept touching the mussel-shell clip in her hair whenever she was thinking.

Shona knew a man in the next town who sold marine silicone and a pane of glass cut to measure. They spent a Saturday with the water siphoned into buckets, Ruth holding the pane while Shona smoothed the seal with her thumb, swearing softly at the cold. By dusk the new glass was filling, and the bubbles had stopped.

Dougie came out from under the gravel first, squaring up to the glass as if he had personally supervised the repair. Marie opened one eye, decided it was none of her concern, and went back to sleep on the till.
