Red-haired mermaid in ornate frame on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A red-haired mermaid with a pink flower in her hair sits at the centre of the design, shown from the shoulders up and smiling towards the left. She is framed by an ornate green scrollwork border topped with a crest, and dark curling shapes wrap around the frame. The shading is smooth and painterly, with bold, saturated colour across the figure, hair and frame against a teal background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Snow had sealed the Greywater road for three days, and Nell Tarrant was still dusting the back parlour when the carter started on about the picture again. "Painted by a drowned man," he said, to nobody, the way he said everything after his second cup. "Ask anyone on the coast road. Frame's off a wreck."

The painting hung above the settle: a woman with copper hair lifting out of a sea-green oval, a pink bloom tucked behind one ear. Nell had cleaned it every Saturday since she was eleven, and every Saturday the scrolled gilt seemed to have more leaves than the week before. Her aunt said it was damp. Her aunt said a lot of things with her mouth full of pins.

That night the wind dropped and the stove ticked down to embers. Nell came in with a candle and stopped. The frame's dark curling arms had reached in from the edges and stood proud of the wood, glistening as though the room were full of spray. The bloom behind the painted ear had opened since supper, and its petals were wet.

The carter was asleep with his boots on the fender. Nell set the candle on the sill, beside the window where the snow lay blue and level as a tablecloth, and said quietly to the woman who smiled sideways at her from the wall, "Not yet, then."
