Ariel and Flounder cartoon tattoo
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A full-colour tattoo shows Ariel, the red-haired mermaid, reclining beside her yellow fish friend Flounder, with a teal tail and clusters of pale blue bubbles around them. The outlines are clean and bold, with smooth cel-style shading on the tail, hair and shell top. The design fills the frame diagonally against a black leather surface.

The lift had been out since Tuesday, so Dev carried the goldfish up all fourteen flights himself, the jar held against his school jumper like a parcel he was not allowed to drop. Nan had named the fish Flounder after a film she said was about a girl who gave up her voice for a man, which Dev thought was a rotten deal and had told her so. On the ninth-floor landing the jar slopped and a single bubble wobbled up the glass.

At the top Nan was waiting in the doorway with the kettle already on and her reading glasses pushed into her grey hair. 'Did he survive?' she asked. 'He's fine. He's sulking.' She took the jar and held it up to the window, where the car park lights were blinking on below. The fish turned in the water, flashing yellow, and Nan laughed the way she did when she thought nobody was watching.
Dev found the old tin of paints under the sink and, on the back of a takeaway menu, drew a girl with red hair floating beneath a crowd of bubbles, a tail the colour of the sea at Margate, and a fish with a silly grin at her elbow. He pinned it to the fridge beside the gas bill.
Nan studied it for a long time. 'She looks like she's having a better time than we are,' she said eventually. 'She's a mermaid, Nan. She's got it sorted.' Nan tapped the picture twice with one knuckle, the way you knock on a door you expect to open. That night, from his bed, Dev could hear the bubbler in the fish tank gurgling in the hall, steady as a kettle coming to the boil, fourteen floors above the traffic.
