Lettering · Colour · Flash
The image shows the word Aries written in a loose, looping handwritten script in pale pink. The strokes vary in thickness and the final letter has a long, sweeping tail. The text sits in the upper left area against a flat coral background with no shading or other elements.

Dear Nell, I have the lettering done for the front of the tent at last, though Mr Pascoe says the paint is too pale for the light over the pitch on Wellington Road. I told him pale is what the word wants. The letters loop and wander the way your name did on the back of every birthday card, so anyone reading it from the gate will think a hand did it, which is what it is.

The ram is called Aries and he is the last thing we have that people still pay to see. The lion went to a farm near Shrewsbury in January and the strongman's ribbons went to the rag man. Pascoe sold the elephant's tent poles for scrap and spent the money on a kettle and a crate of lemonade for the children. Aries is stubborn and bored, and every afternoon at four he butts the gate until someone opens it, which the children now queue for. That is the show.
Last Thursday a boy of about nine stood at the rail for an hour with a penny in his fist. When I asked why he didn't buy a ticket, he said the ram had looked at him as though he owed it money. I laughed so hard I had to sit on the trestle. He gave me the penny anyway and asked me to paint his name on the caravan door, so I did, in the same pale pink, and it already looks as though it has always been there.
Pascoe says we move on Monday to Ilfracombe. Write to me there, care of the post office, and tell me what the sea is doing. Love, Ada
